GM has filed for bankruptcy, A lesson to what Indian car manufacturers can avoid doing?
What went wrong with GM?
The company just hoped that it would be able to live forever on its brand loyalty. It felt that people would just keep on buying their same cars even when things all around GM were changing rapidly. Losing sight of what people actually wanted led to this end of an era.
People wanted a car which would give them better mileage and this important indicator, of having more fuel efficient cars was also missed by GM. This is where Toyota gained and GM started losing out.
The designs of GM just simply did not appeal. GM did keep up with new models but with competition from the likes of Honda and Toyota, churning out swanky and better looking cars, the new models of GM just did not find favour. Its Aveo model was a complete failure and its Cobalt, though was doing well was no match for Toyota’s Corolla and Honda’s Civic.
The economic turbulence and then the fall in demand also just added on to the already brimming cup of woes.
Labour cost was almost $2,360 per car, which was $800 more than Ford's and $500 more than Chrysler's.
The biggest lesson for all car makers from this fall of GM – always listen to the dealers. The showrooms are the true indicators of what customers actually want. GM failed to do that.
GM ran the company the in the same way for 70 years, following the same rules laid down in the memo by its founder. Also the arrogance of success was so high, they just failed to adapt to fundamental changes in the industry.
By the time GM realised its follies and started making amends, it was too late and too little. Till then the Japanese had stolen away a considerable market share and the same brand loyalty which GM was harping on about, was now pass. thanks

SATYAM Bidding process News Satyam Share price
SATYAM STAKE SALE Bidding process will be received by 10 a.m. on 13th April and would be opened on that day itself. Since market is closed on 14th April,
Who are final bidders for Satyam?
As of date, there are 4 serious bidders in the fray and they are L&T, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant Technologies and P E Firm W L Ross.
Earlier, iGate, Hinduja Group and B K Modi controlled Spice Group opted out of the race, though, Spice Group maintains that it could re-enter the bidding, if its conditions for an open auction and transparent process are met.
There has been speculation that IBM has pulled out of the race, on fears of 13 US Class Action Suits, filed against Satyam in courts by ADR holders.
What will be the expected Satyam Share price after bidding?
Satyam is owning close to 75 lakh Sq.Feet of constructed area across the globe.
The present value of all these real estates is pegged at close to Rs. 4,000 crores.
prospects of recovering funds of Satyam, having diverted to Maytas. valuation of Rs.60- Rs.72 per share. Also, if two top acquirers are in a 10% band, open bidding can take it to upper range of Rs. 72.
Suggestion to the Satyam Stock investors.
Going with current trends bids are likely to be aggressive and share price is likely to react upward. In this situation, if one remains invested upto 15th April in the stock would stand to gain.

SATYAM STAKE SALE Bidding Guidelines Summary
SATYAM STAKE SALE, The good news for the day was Satyam getting the green signal from SEBI for inducting a strategic partner through sale of 51% m via a global bidding process. Expression of Interest from qualified investors will be invited shortly.
A quick glance at the fine print of the guidelines
- Satyam will issue fresh equity of 31% to the investor. Remaining 20% would be made through an open offer at the same share price as the price paid by the investor for the subscription.
- Second preferential allotment allowed if bidder fails in first attempt to acquire 51% but this would not be thro’ an open offer. The investor would have a lock-in of 3 years from the date of the acquisition, though there is no restriction on subscription to additional equity shares.
- Qualified investors who bid should have total net assets in excess of US$150 million.
- SEBI has exempted Satyam from the normal rules.
- International bidding process to be followed.
- The process of selection of a strategic investor will be overseen by a retired judge of the Supreme Court or former Chief Justice of India.
Since the stake sale of Satyam is being made by preferential issue route, it may see a bidding of upto Rs.100 per share. A potential acquirer, may have to shell out another Rs.1,800 crore to make an open offer for 20% shares, being 18.20 crore of the expanded equity of 91 crore shares, at about Rs.100 per share. So a potential acquirer must have financial ability to contribute close to Rs.4,000 crore for acquiring an effective control of Satyam. thanks

Tata bonds or NCD issue of Tata Capital
The fall in the financial performance of most of the companies, the pledging of shares and indications that the group was undergoing major liquidity crunch, all have obviously impacted the Tata group stocks negatively. The stocks, expect for maybe TCS have constantly been on the sellers list.
And in the midst of all this, the group company Tata Capital announced its NCD issue. All raised their eyebrows in surprise and wondered whether there would be any subscribers at all. The rights issue of Tata Motors was too fresh in the mind to be put off. Yet, the Tata Capital NCD issue has managed to get oversubscribed 6 times, receiving bids worth more than Rs 3,000 crore on robust response from all categories of investors. The company would retain subscriptions worth Rs 1,500 crore from the issue and it would listed on the NSE.
This indicates two things – people still have a lot of faith in the name of Tata. And secondly, it is equity in which people seem to have lost faith in. Bonds have become an instrument of choice for investors and it would be no doubt that the success of the NCD issue of Tata Capital would now prompt other companies to come out with similar issues. thanks

Interim Budget Highlights Union Budget 2009 10
This interim budget was more about winning the vote bank and not about the economy. The market, as expected was badly disappointed, ndtv, union budget 2009, union budget 2009 10, interim budget highlights, interim budget
Now the market will once again look at global cues for a sense of direction and maybe it will keep expectations running high for a third economic stimulus or a reduction in interest rates by RBI. For the next three months, this damp squib of interim budget means that India would have to live with nothing really to expect and that too in an extremely hostile global environment.

Bailout or Economic stimulus FAQ
“Economic stimulus” and “bailout” are the two news words gifted to the world by America. Every other day, we hear about the economic stimulus package and the markets, around the world rallies in anticipation.
Now here is a funny side to this economic stimulus which we received on the net and actually makes one sit and think about where is America headed.
The Economic Stimulus is a very exciting new program that can best be explained using the Q and A format:
"Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?
"A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.
"Q. Where will the government get this money?
"A. From taxpayers.
"Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?
"A. No, they are borrowing it from China . Your children are expected to repay the Chinese.
"Q. What is the purpose of this payment?
"A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.
"Q. But isn't that stimulating the economy of China?
"A. Shut up!"
Below is some helpful advice on how to best help the US economy by spending your stimulus check wisely:
If you spend that money at Wal-Mart, all the money will go to China .
If you spend it on gasoline it will go to Hugo Chavez, the Arabs and Al Queda
If you purchase a computer it will go to Taiwan .
If you purchase fruit and vegetables it will go to Mexico, Honduras, and Guatemala (unless you buy organic).
If you buy a car it will go to Japan and Korea .
If you purchase prescription drugs it will go to India
If you purchase heroin it will go to the Taliban in Afghanistan
If you give it to a charitable cause, it will go to Nigeria.
And none of it will help the American economy.

IPL Auction 2009 Bidding Tyron Henderson
Second round of Indian Premier League (IPL) auctions happening at Goa,
Andrew Flintoff and Kevin Pietersen, overtook Dhoni to become IPL's costliest players, were bought by Chennai & Bangalore respectively for Rs.7.55 crore each.
On 4th Feb, Shilpa Shetty and her business partner Raj Kundra bought about 12% in IPL’s team - Rajasthan Royals Jaipur for about Rs 80.6 crore. With this deal, the valuation of Rajasthan Royals, which won the maiden IPL tournament in 2008, has more than doubled to around $140 million in about one year since the cricket franchisee was bought at last year’s auction for $67 million. Rajasthan Royals had paid the lowest price in season one of IPL by its owners Emerging Media.
We all desperately need something like IPL, which comes free for us unlike going to the movies. Maybe the IPL will help the healing which is so badly needed right now. And it is this need for change which the corporates have sensed and are thus putting money – to help revive the sentiments and in the bargain, earn some money and brand mileage!ipl, indian premier league, ipl bidding, ipl auction 2009, ipl cricket
Tyron Henderson Base price: $100000. One of the stars of the England domestic Twenty20 Cup, guiding Middlesex to glory. Known as ‘twenty20 specialist’,
*Rajasthan Royals got Tyron Henderson for $650000 *Delhi got Owais Shah for $275000 *Collingwood has gone to Delhi Dare Devils *Fidel Edwards, West Indian fast bowler has gone to the Hyderabad Deccan Chargers for $150k

Talks wont get jobs In This Recession Period
In today’s time, it is considered to be good fortune if you have a job and that too a job, which has not yet cut your pay, forget getting a bonus. Jobs from almost any profession seem hard to come by and very well qualified people, with years of experience seem to be eroding the soles of their shoes once again, looking for the all elusive job.
Software engineers, who were the toast of the country a few years ago are now having a rough time. The global financial meltdown has led to complete downsizing and now with Europe also into recession, more global job cuts are on the anvil. But in the midst of all this gloom, seeing an opportunity when all are seeing a dead end is the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). This institute states that due to the global meltdown and slowdown affecting the country, the profession of accounting would take lead in ensuring financial discipline at all levels of management.
Infact the demand for Chartered Accountants (CAs) is expected to go up as they can guide and take the lead in ensuring financial discipline to the profession of accounting. Right now, more than the IT professionals, it would be those in the accounting and equity research profession, which would be jobless. And such motivating talks could only probably help lift the spirits but not ensure jobs.

Is There Recession In India? Results
Who says there is a recession in India? All over, the newspapers and television channels report stories about how recession is affecting the lives of people world over and in India. But this recession seems to have been felt most by those in the lower and middle income groups. On the other hand, those who have the surplus money, even today, are ready to buy anything. The automobile sector is going through a tough time as its cars, whose market is usually the middle income group is not buying. But the luxury car makers are raking in the moolah like never before.
A report states that although the growth of mass-market and mid-size cars has fallen around 5 per cent, the sale growth of luxury cars, classified as cars available Rs.25 lakh onwards and the super luxury class (above Rs.1 crore) have not declined. Demand for luxury brands like Lamborghini, Bentley, Rolls Royce and Porsche have proved a sell-out in the Indian market. Rolls Royce has sold its full quota of 16 cars this year, Porsche will double its sales to 200 units and Lamborghini has already sold its quota of 11 cars for the year.
And encouraged by this, German luxury car maker Daimler, which owns the Mercedes badge, plans to launch six models from the AMG class in India before the end of this month, carrying a price tag of Rs.1.25- Rs.3 crore. This is the most expensive car in Daimler’s lineup and will be custom ordered and delivered directly from Germany. What also came as a shocker is that Germany’s Big three automakers Mercedes, BMW and Audi are all set to surpass last year’s sales to touch double-digit growth this year. Doesn’t this actually mean that recession has actually widened the gap, increased inequalities? And that is a more difficult situation to tackle.

BSE Making Way With Inflation Slipping to Single Digit
Inflation came as a pleasant surprise, slipping into the single digit at 8.98% for the week ended 1st Nov 08'
Looks like BSE is all set to get itself listed in its own exchange! It has been contemplating getting listed for quite some ti e now but was trapped so much in its own internal politics that it probably never had the time and energy to look beyond. And now looks like, the eagerly awaited listing will finally happen.
Like all companies listed on the BSE, before they go public, they dole out largess to the existing shareholders so that can reap the maximum moolah when the company gets listed. Issuing hefty dividends and bonus shares is always a prelude to the listing process. And that is precisely what BSE has done. Apart from giving out a 3000% dividend in 2007-08, its shareholders have also been blessed with an equally huge bonus. It is offering 12 bonus shares for very share held by shareholders. This was a much anticipated move as the bonus issue would raise the BSE’s equity capital from the current Rs.78 lakh to Rs.10 crore, which is the limit applicable to companies seeking listing on the National Stock Exchange (NSE). The minimum paid-up capital requirement for BSE listing is Rs 3 crore.
BSE had chalked out a road map for listing in FY08 but that did not happen. FY09 might be the year, what with the BSE now fulfilling all the required criteria for listing. There is a probability that the BSE might get itself listed without an IPO as it has no real requirement for funds right now. It may seek an exemption from SEBI from floating an IPO. Also given the current market conditions, maybe it might not be such a good idea to float an IPO. On the other hand, maybe an IPO from BSE would actually help revive the dormant IPO market and bring back some life. It would indeed a new chapter in the history of BSE and trading for the investors when an exchange gets listed like a corporate and people trade on it.

Slowdown Effect on Auto Industary
All around us, there are signs of a slowdown and the plight of the auto sector, as we have stated time and time again, has been the worst. Truck majors Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors have had to resort to various ways and means to prevent pile up of inventory. Overall the picture looks very dim for the sector, yet, unmindful of all this, using this current low as an opportunity, despite mounting troubles and losses in USA, General Motors is going ahead with its plans for India. It plans to introduce two new cars in 2009 - the premium Chevrolet Cruze sedan and a new compact car priced under its Spark model. The Spark will compete head-on with Maruti's M800 model in terms of price.
Infact the company has started production at its second Indian plant at Talegaon in Maharashtra and is also going ahead with an investment of $210 million investment at the plant. These plans of GM took all by surprise as it was generally assumed by all that given the financial crisis which GM is going through in US and the overall slowdown, at a time when all are cutting down production, the company would have scuttled all the expansion and launch plans. But it is reassuring to know that it’s sights on India remains clear. This down turn in also a cycle and one can only go up from here. So when the upturn comes, it makes to sense to have the entire arsenal ready to capture the markets. A good strategy but difficult for many to follow right now as liquidity is a major issue and expansions is the last thing on the mind!

ICICI Bank Q2 Results PAT Rose 39%.
In the news for all the wrong reasons, ICICI Bank posted its second quarter results for the period ended 30th September 2008. Not as bad as expected but yet, much below the 3% growth rate in PAT predicted; India’s largest private sector bank posted a marginal 1.09% YoY rise in 1.09% in net profit at Rs 1,014 crore. Sequentially, PAT rose 39%.
Net interest income increased 20% to Rs. 2,148 crore and its fee income increased 26% to Rs. 1,876 crore. Its operating profit rose 42% YoY to Rs 2,437 crore.
But the story does a complete turnaround when we look at the consolidated numbers. For Q2FY09, on a YoY, PAT declined 27.44% to Rs 651.48 crore for the quarter ended September 2008. Consolidated revenues went up just 12.56% to Rs 15,590.46 crore.
The bank's capital adequacy at the end of September 2008 stood at 14.01%, with Tier-1 capital adequacy being at 11.03%. The consolidated net non-performing asset (NPA) ratio of the bank and its subsidiaries was 1.6%.
ICICI increased funds set aside for bad loans and losses on investments in Q2FY09 to Rs.924 crore, up 43% from Rs.644 crore made in Q2FY08. This increased provision is indeed a worrying factor.
The bank had stated earlier that it may set aside $28 million for MTM losses on its $82 million Lehman debt at its UK unit. But the figure for current Q2 indicates that it has posted a loss of $35 million in its U.K. operations during the six months to Sept. 30. Overseas operations account for 25% of ICICI’s assets.
Investor confidence in the stock is at rock bottom. There has been an ongoing bout of sell off on the counter since it disclosed its investments in the bankrupt Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc. Overseas investors reduced their holding in ICICI to 36.4% in current Q2 from 38.9% in current Q1.

Recession Management In 10 Steps
Recession is coming .... make your own judgment, don't panic !! Do what is wise. [Recession:The state of the economy declines; a widespread decline in the GDP and Decline in the employment and trade lasting from six months to a year]
The recession looks very eminent. It is really time to take pro active steps to avoid a painful time in the next two years which is how long the recession is expected to last.
Suggestions:
1. DON'T TAKE ANY LOANS; BUY HOMES, PROPERTIES WITH LOANS, OR EVEN don't buy any/many things with CASH.KEEP AS MUCH CASH AS POSSIBLE.
2. Pay off as much of personal loans, private loans, as debt collection will be hastened.
3. Sell any stocks you can even at lower prices.
4. Take money off from Trust Funds.
5. Don't believe in huge sales forecast from customers, be extremely prudent, lowest inventories, reduce liabilities.
6. Don't invest in new capital.
7. If you are selling homes/ properties/ cars, do it now, when you can get good prices, they are going to fall.
8. Don't invest in new business proposals.
9. Cancel holiday plans using credit cards.
10. Don't change jobs, as companies will retrench based on 'last in first out'.
Stay cool, wait, and if you took all of the above actions and more, you probably will be better off then many. This is not a rumor. Bear Stearns is the first of many banking and financial institutions that will start falling in the not too future. If Bear Stearns can fall, so can JP Morgan, Citibank, HSBC, and the whole world. US economy falls, the rest will crumble.
India and all those self economies will be the most protected, but not gullible.
